Creative Visualization A Relaxation Technique For Our Time By Patrick K. Porter, Ph.D...
It is natural before starting work on a task, when an idea is being formed in the mind, that you automatically start wondering about its result. The imagination is stretched to try and plan ahead to handle the result, regardless of whether it is a success or a failure. The images a person conjures up in their minds eye is termed Visualization. Visualization is an integral part of our lives. But to be able to use it to our benefit, it is important conjure the right image for the right result. For example, a golfer can mentally visualizes the perfect swing over and over again, so that when he encounters the situation, in this case a golf competition, his brain is already accustomed to replicate the swing in real life scenario. In a study done by Russian scientists, it was found that the section of Olympic athletes who underwent more mental training than others, consistently performed better. They observed that mental images can act as a prelude to muscular impulses. I call this form of Visualization, Creative Visualization. So how does it help the common man, who is not an Olympic athlete? Creative Visualization, or CV, is a tool available for use by everybody, regardless of the activity concerned. It helps in strengthening the bond between the mind and the body. It is common knowledge and also scientifically proved that the more harmonious body and mind are, that any task at hand can be accomplished more efficiently. Hence, the body also responds through clammy palms, higher heart rate and nervousness. This is the effect of CV gone wrong. Imagine a state where the brain does not automatically kick into overdrive, but analyzes the situation and reacts accordingly. Wouldnt we be able to handle any kind of pressure situations in a better way, without giving in to pre-programmed automatic responses? This is where Relaxation Response comes into picture. Our mind is already preconditioned with the years of reacting to situations. In-fact, the preconditioning is so strong that we already have images ready for hypothetical situations also. That is reason we get flustered when a cop pulls up for a routine check. Though we know that we are not at fault, thoughts are already racing in the mind as to all the bad things that can happen during the situation. Contrary to the adverse effects Stress has on our body,

relaxation makes us healthier. Relaxation response helps in curtailing the fight-or-flight reaction and boosts the alpha brain wave activity. Hence the body does not react adversely to tense situations. Once the mind is relaxed it is easier to think clearly and logically and arrive at a response which is practical. Triggering this relaxation makes sure that the blood pressure is normal; breathing remains regular and a steady pulse rate. Simple steps to being able to use Creative Visualization and Relaxation to your advantage, it is imperative to use both sides of the brain. The right side of the brain is associated with is the creative part and the left side is the practical part. Depending on the situation at hand, either or both sides of the brain get into action. So obviously, to succeed in that task, you must first identify which part of the brain is more important; whether its the creativity part or the practicality part! The people who can equally exploit both sides of the brain are called Whole-Brain thinkers. Some of them are gifted that way, and some of us have to put an effort to practice whole-brain thinking to achieve the results. Once the balance is achieved, any situation can be handled in a relaxed manner. This helps in secreting some chemicals in the brain which have a positive outcome on our body and mind. The book, Thrive in Overdrive " How to Navigate your Overloaded Lifestyle, has the techniques required to optimize the brain activities. Following these simple techniques has the power to radically change you lifestyle.
